How do you choose an SEO provider without getting burned?

Hiring help with SEO can save a lot of time, but the field has its share of overclaiming. A few questions separate a genuine provider from a risky one.

Ask what they will actually do

A credible provider can explain their work in plain terms: the pages they will improve, the technical fixes, the content, the local signals. Vagueness or secrecy is a warning sign.

Ask how they report

You should receive regular, understandable reports tied to business outcomes such as enquiries and visibility, not just a list of activity. Transparent reporting is a fair expectation.

Be wary of guarantees

No one can guarantee a specific position on Google, because no one controls the algorithm. A guarantee of "number one in thirty days" is a reason to walk away, not a reason to sign.

Check that methods are above board

Ask whether they follow search engine guidelines. Buying links, fake reviews, and hidden text can get a site penalised. The cleanup costs more than the shortcut ever saved.

Expect a realistic timeline

A trustworthy provider sets expectations about months, not days, and explains that results build gradually and are never guaranteed. Honesty about timing is a good sign.
